It grew out of the IRIS-T air-to-air missile: work on a surface-launched version began in 2007, the first unguided test flight took place in 2009 and the complete prototype was fired from 2012 onwards.\n\nA fire unit pairs the truck-mounted TRML-4D, an AESA search radar on a rotating mast, with launcher trucks that each carry eight IRIS-T SL missiles in vertical containers, in two rows of four. The missile is launched straight up, turns towards its target and can engage aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones out to about 40 km and up to 20 km of altitude.\n\nEgypt became the first export customer at the end of 2021, but it was Ukraine that first took the system into combat: a fire unit originally built for the Egyptian order was handed over in October 2022 and was soon defending Ukrainian cities against Russian missiles and drones. More batteries followed, and Germany accepted its own first fire unit in 2024.
