The MS-1 (full name: "Малый Сопровождения 1", meaning "Small Support Tank 1"), developed and mass-produced by the Soviet Union from 1927 to 1931, was the country's first domestically produced tank and the origin of Soviet armored forces. Inspired by the French Renault FT-17, it featured riveted armor (max thickness 16 mm), a short-barreled 37 mm gun (upgraded to 45 mm in later models), and a 7.62 mm machine gun, with a 2-man crew and a top speed of about 24 km/h. The MS-1 saw action in the 1929 Sino-Soviet conflict over the Chinese Eastern Railway but suffered from poor off-road performance (e.g., difficulty crossing trenches), leading to most being converted into static gun emplacements later. As the starting point of the Soviet tank industry, it laid the foundation for subsequent classic tanks like the T-26.
